PROPOSED COFFEE TABLE BOOK

Living on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, seeing the beauty of the atoll and enjoying the undersea life inspired me to take up photography. The lagoon offers an amazing kaleidoscope of blues and greens ranging from deep emerald to a brilliant turquoise. The sunsets are just as spectacular with vivid reds, oranges and golds. The underwater world is a myriad of marine life, colourful coral gardens and clear, warm waters. How best to show off this unique group of islands other than capturing the images on camera.

Inspiration is the very place I live, work and play. Everyday is different, regardless of visiting the same dive sites or photo locations. You just never know what may show up. I thrill at seeing new fish and experiencing that gorgeous sunrise or beautiful sunset. You just need to pick up a camera and start shooting.

There are many great photographers in this world, past and present. I am so new to photography that many of these masters still remain unknown to me. However, one image and one Aussie photographer always springs to mind and that is Max Dupain and his image called the Sunbaker. It's so simple, yet to me, so powerful and memorable.

My main interest is the marine life that abounds the atoll, however I cannot discount the picturesque earthscape that is easily accessible to everyone. During the past few years I have gained knowledge in shooting land and underwater digital photography with thanks to people like Glen Cowans and dedicated photographic forums such as Digital Diver and Nikonians.

".....digital photography is another form of art. To embrace this art you need
to see rather than look. Once you discover this, 'ordinary' everyday life becomes
anything but......"

Karen Willshaw 2007

The earth is full of beauty. The beauty of this earth is pixels just waiting to be captured.
