Memorials on Cocos

Several important memorials are located on Cocos (Keeling) Islands. During the coming months, articles will be written on these memorials. Any contributions in the way of editorials or photos will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged.

MEMORIAL TO THOMAS HENNIKER

Earlier this year the Department of Defence funded a stone memorial, dedication service and reception to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of Flying Officer Thomas Henniker who died on the 26th April, 1991 when the P3 Orion in which he was travelling crashed at Rumah Baru. All other crew members survived thanks to luck's fortune and the rescue efforts of member of the local community. Three surviving members of that fateful flight were present for the respectful dedication by Group Captain Noel Williams on 26th April, 2001.

The new memorial rests temporarily in the Administration forecourt behind a smaller stone tribute. It will be moved to its permanent position at Rumah Baru once the new port facility has been completed.

The inscription reads:

Thomas James Henniker
who was tragically killed on 26 April 1991
while on duty on board the P3 Orion
Aircraft A9-754 which ditched at Cocos Island
His family and friends, the RAAF and the
Cocos Island community will never forget
him. Australia is proud of Flying Officer
Henniker who served his nation with pride.
His name will live forever.
